The word ozone can mean more than just the ozone layer! Ozone itself is a form of oxygen that contains three oxygen molecules, or O3. When it is in its pure O3 state, ozone is a colorless and flavorless gas. Originally studied for use in the dental field beginning in the 1930’s ozone gas can actually become a powerful dental antibiotic and disinfectant used to treat a variety of dental concerns!
Ozone can be used for a variety of dental concerns, but is most effective for concerns that need additional disinfecting or infection treatment.
Tooth Decay: One of the biggest uses for ozone is in tooth decay, as the antibiotic properties of ozone can disinfect and prep larger sections of tooth decay for restoration, or prevent future small cavities or decay.
Endodontics: Prior to a root canal, ozone can be used to disinfect the tooth canal and pulp tissue to ensure a smoother endodontic treatment.
Periodontal Disease: Gum disease is an extremely common dental concern, and if it is not caught early, it can create a major problem. However, ozone can be applied to the gums and to any abscesses to clean and treat them.
The ozone dental therapy treatment process varies depending on what you need it for. Generally, there are three different ways in which ozone can be applied to the mouth, and each specific method determines the effectiveness of treatment. Ozone gas can be applied directly to the mouth for an overall disinfecting treatment. However, for more localized treatment needs, ozone can be mixed with water and sprayed into the mouth, or turned into a dental oil and applied directly to the infected or decayed spot within the mouth. Generally, most dentists will utilize ozone gas over water and oil, as it provides exceptional full-mouth treatment.
