You brush your teeth, first, then you floss. And then there it is, that familiar taste of blood in your mouth. You spit into the sink, and sure enough, there’s blood there. You can clearly see that the blood is coming from your gums. But why? At our holistic dental office in Wilmington, we find that so many patients, especially folks over 40, have some form of mild to even more severe periodontal or gum disease.

Let’s take a look at gum disease, why it happens, and how we can fix it.

What is Gum Disease?

When your gums are infected the tissues surrounding your teeth becomes red, inflamed, and uncomfortable. Gum disease generally occurs due to poor oral hygiene, but that’s not the sole cause. Sore gums that bleed when you brush or eat, is usually a sign that you’ve got advanced periodontal issues, so you’ll want to visit your holistic dentist in Wilmington at first sight of anything out of the ordinary.

You’ll find that most gum disease is usually caused by bad bacteria that can build up in our mouth after eating and drinking. However, other risk factors can cause issues with your gums, so if you see blood when you brush it could be due to something such as:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal changes
  • Genetics
  • Prescription medications
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Stress
  • Crooked teeth
  • Acidic or shared diseased saliva

What Can We Do to Fix Gum Disease?

Like we said before, if you’re having any issues at all with your gums and struggle to keep them healthy, it’s time you spoke to your Wilmington holistic dentist. Because we believe in the strong connection between your oral and overall health, we want to find the root cause of your gum disease. Is there a connection to an underlying illness? Do you lack proper vitamins and nutrients? Is the positioning of your teeth causing your gum issues?

We’re specially trained and equipped with advanced, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technologies to help determine why you have gum disease and how we can fix it. Our holistic dental office in Wilmington uses the LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) laser to help treat gum disease. It’s gentle, effective, and leaves behind very few side effects to help you get on with your day without side effects. Compared to conventional gum surgery that requires cutting into your gum tissue to remove infection, usually requiring stitches and anesthesia. The LANAP laser requires only a small amount of local anesthetic. You won’t need stitches, see any scalpels, or experience bleeding post-treatment.

Trust the team at All About Smiles to work with you to assess the level of your gum disease, determine what underlying conditions could be causing it, and what effects it could be having elsewhere in your body. Please call our office and set up a no-obligation consultation. We’ll go over some treatment options to help you and your smile feel better fast. Please don’t hesitate to call. We’re always here for you and your family – no matter what your smile needs!
